Located 35 km east of the city of Puno, Taquile covers approximately 11.6 km² and rises to about 3,906 meters above sea level. One of its greatest attractions is the islanders’ way of life, where ancestral customs and distinctive, colorful traditional clothing remain an important part of daily life. Agriculture, fishing and textile production are central activities. Taquile is internationally renowned for its finely woven textiles, and visitors can stay in local family homes and experience the community’s hospitality. Taquile’s textile art has received UNESCO recognition as Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the island remains especially known for garments woven from alpaca and sheep wool.
